Green Arch

Mission:

Green Arch Panther is the expanded and evolved version of the NYU Green Arch Initiative. It is made up of this wiki, a blog, a Google calendar, and the original Green Arch Google group. Green Arch Panther is meant to be a place where the different students and groups working on sustainability at NYU and in the community can connect, share ideas and resources, and collaborate. The group came about when a member of the Environmental Law Society contacted two other NYU environmental groups — Earth Matters and Wagner Environmental Policy and Action — and asked for a joint meeting. The result was Green Arch.

Method:

The group of students and faculty, which was founded in February 2005, is pushing NYU to take on environmental sustainability, and it’s getting things done. The environmental studies program was one of the group’s first projects. Before the wind-power purchase, Green Arch offered university officials suggestions for limiting power usage and finding more sustainable energy. Green Arch is working on making NYU buildings environmentally friendly with a focus on the new 12th Street residence hall and providing organic and locally grown food in dining halls, among other projects. Members of Green Arch will also be a part of the Sustainability Task Force, which is part of the university’s Green Action Plan. Green Arch focuses on providing information to support greening policy at the university rather than organizing specific service projects and picketing, Friedman said. He added that Green Arch isn’t technically an NYU club because that would prevent NYU faculty and staff from joining.
