Mission:
As a private university in the public service, NYU has a responsibility to embed environmental sustainability as a core value of its academic mission and administrative operations.
Through investments in renewable energy and infrastructure, community-wide programming, academic research, and the fostering of a deep understanding of environmental values, NYU can act as a global leader in urban environmental scholarship and practice.
Sustainability means bringing together diverse segments of the NYU community - students, faculty, administrators, staff, parents, alumni, neighbors, and beyond - to solve environmental problems and improve everyone’s quality of life.
Method:
The NYU Sustainability Task Force is a university-sanctioned advisory body made up of students, faculty and administrators representing constituencies from all over the campus. The Sustainability Task Force conducts a comprehensive assessment of current practices; recommending a prioritized Green Action Plan to improve NYU’s environmental footprint; engaging faculty, students and administrators in sustainability efforts; and developing a method to award funds for green projects. The Green Grants funds projects that reduce NYU’s adverse environmental impacts, engage the campus community, demonstrate the viability of best practices and technologies, and advance applied research and educational goals. Sustainability staff and the Task Force’s Data Subcommittee are working to assemble information about a broad range of operational environmental impacts into a comprehensive NYU Environmental Assessment. The Assessment will centralize data from many campus sources and systems, and then analyze that data to guide new policies and initiatives. The Assessment will also serve as the backbone for a set of metrics to evaluate our trajectory and progress toward sustainability goals. NYU is a large user of energy with an output of almost 1% of New York City’s total green house gas emissions. With the goal of reducing the green house gas emissions by 30% by 2017, an energy strategy is being developed to provide clear guidelines throughout the university community for construction, maintenance, and the ongoing use of energy; reduce the impacts of energy production on the environment; and help make New York City a better place to live. http://www.campusdish.com/NR/rdonlyres/5CDF5BDE-7D48-494D-B16F-935D60699051/0/sustainabilitybrochure.pdf
