America Reads

Mission:

    The America Reads Challenge calls on all Americans to help ensure that every American child can read well and independently by the end of 3rd grade.

Method:

    Gathering a group of student volunteers from colleges and sending them out to nearby public schools to help teachers with their students.

Where:

All across America; at more than 1100 colleges and universities.

Target populations:

Colleges/universities for tutors and students at public schools (elementary, middle, high schools).

Current resources:

Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA), Reading Success Network.

What CHEFs can provide:

  • A direct connection/partnership with college students who are willing to donate their time and effort in reaching this goal.
  • An opportunity to further better the community by providing nutritional information to young students.
  • More publicity (support) by hosting CHEFs events in the classrooms.
  • Volunteers who are familiar with the local public schools’ dynamics and operations.
