Mission:
The students of the College of Arts and Science (CAS) elect the College of Arts and Science Student Council (CASSC) to serve as their student governing body of the school. The CASSC are the primary representatives, advocates, and liaisons to the CAS community, including its administration, faculty, alumni, and students, as well as to the public. Our mission is a two-fold: advocacy and programming. On the advocacy end we strive to gather and express student opinions, actively represent student views, appropriately address student concerns, and provide a forum for the student body. On the programming end we strive to create and continue social traditions and programs designed to foster cohesiveness within the entire undergraduate population; for example, we are responsible for the annual Block Party on Washington Place, the Faculty-Student Banquet, the CAS Annual Formal, the Alumni-Student Banquet, and Bun Week (the CAS spirit week).
Alumni Relations:
We want to make it easy for you to meet these amazing people and realize what a great resource they are. This upcoming year, we will be holding our usual Alumni Meet and Greets, hosting the fifth-annual Alumni-Student Banquet, and attending sporting events, along with whatever else it is that you want to do with the CAS alumni.
Cirriculum:
Everyone has complained about their classes at some point. You do it; I do it; we all do it. Want to do something about it though? Join the Curriculum Committee as we aid and challenge the college and departments to design new courses and majors, adjust the Morse Academic Plan, and much more. In addition, join us as we plan the second-annual Faculty-Student Banquet—help us plan, mingle with the faculty, and maybe score a date with Marc Lieberman? Just a recommendation.
Appropriations and Budget:
The Appropriations and Budget Committee allocates the entire budget of the College of Arts and Science Student Council. In addition to handling all council expenditures, this committee appropriates all council sponsored club budgets. The membership of this committee is limited to the council treasurer, student relations chair, curriculum chair, and to other council members yet to be appointed. The council president sits as a non-voting ex-officio member.
Student Affairs:
The Student Affairs Committee is responsible for the creation, planning, and production of all social and programming events within the college. We have done everything from poker tournaments to dating auctions. Along with new and exciting events, we always have our traditional ones: CAS Formal and Bun Week (essentially a spirit week but a thousand times more fun). In addition, we are in the process of starting a College of Arts and Science Convenience Store on the 9th Floor of the Silver Building.
Student Advocacy:
Our primary purpose is to defend and promote the rights of the students; we give more direction and strength to the students’ voice. In essence, the Student Advocacy Committee is about you and your peers, and relations that take place between you and the school. It aims to provide an accessible avenue of involvement for all CAS undergrads into the regulations and workings of the school, to make your opinions heard and respected, and to ensure that you are always fairly and accurately represented by the General Assembly and by your university. By joining this committee, make yourself better heard by your school and represent yourself, your friends, and fellows.
Communications:
The Communication Committee is all about public relations. In addition to networking all across the university community, we do a range of work and develop a range of skills—from advertising to marketing to promoting. While we don’t exactly represent a hotel mogul (yet), we do know how to turn out a great party. Join the fun and come check out the Communications Committee.
