Mission:
The mission of the College of Nursing, as an integral part of a research-one private university “in the public service” is to generate new knowledge and educate future nursing professionals who in turn, exemplify the highest standards of excellence in research, education and practice for a global society. The vision for the NYU College of Nursing enterprise is a continuous progress in our scholarship excellence and innovations that advance humane and quality healthcare for all people.
Method:
It seems intuitive that a college of nursing would embody service as a central component of its mission. So it is for our NYU College of Nursing. Our service to the community encompasses a broad spectrum ranging from blood pressure screening clinics in Grand Central Station, to specialized programs such as our “Carelink NYC” that partners the Visiting Nurse Service of New York City and senior nursing students at NYU with community agencies to enhance care for older adults. Our students travel locally and globally to remote villages as well as big cities to examine and participate in health care that makes a difference. This engagement in community service projects is both fulfilling and indelibly linked to the essence of our profession.
Consistent with our Mission of being “a private university in public service” and with seed money from the Hugoton Foundation, New York University College of Nursing has recently acquired a 36-foot mobile health vehicle. This nurse-managed facility has two on-board exam rooms and will provide school-based primary healthcare services in Brooklyn, NY with specific emphasis on health of immigrant children.
The Urban Health Care Program at NYU College of Nursing, through the generous support of the Louis and Rachel Rudin Foundation, offers undergraduate nursing students a full-time paid summer internship at community health care centers and clinics in Manhattan. The goal of the program is to teach students about primary care of underserved urban populations in community-based settings. Participating agencies include the outpatient clinics at Gouverneur Hospital, Covenant House, Downtown Family Services, and Lower East Side Service Center.

Current Resources:
Community Partnerships in Nursing (CPN) is an innovative and unique approach to meeting the needs of community agencies and health providers for Nurse Practitioners through an academic nursing affiliation. The contracts with community agencies and health providers are to provide the agency with one or more certified Nurse Practitioners. The Nurse Practitioner has a faculty appointment in NYU’s College of Nursing but works in the agency as a full or part-time staff member. The agency in turn becomes a clinical teaching site for NYU nurse practitioner students through the Nurse Practitioner serving as a preceptor.
Purpose:
- To fulfill the mission of NYU as a private university in the public’s service. CPN partners with community agencies and health providers to offer the highest quality of Nurse Practitioner services to their clients and patients, especially those who are have special needs and are underserved.
- To prepare the next generation of nurses in community-based roles for Nurse Practitioners. CPN meets the educational mission of the College of Nursing and advances the nursing profession through its partnerships with community agencies. CPN seeks partners who offer innovative models of care delivery incorporating the full scope of practice roles for nurse practitioners
Current Community Partners:
- Federation of Employment and Guidance Services (FEGS)
