  • Mission: “United Way is a community problem solver”. “United Way of New York City creates, leads and supports strategic initiatives that address the root causes of critical human care problems in order to achieve measurable improvement in the lives of the city’s most vulnerable residents and communities.
  • Method: “Partner with neighborhood agencies, government, business, foundations, volunteers and others so that collectively we can achieve more than any one organization working alone”.
  • Target Populations:
    • Low-income families at risk of losing their homes
    • Youth and adults manage and remain in control of their health
    • New York City children, and helping at-risk youth overcome barriers to learning
    • Low-income New Yorkers prepare for and maintain career-potential employment
  • Current Resources:
    • Partner with selected organizations to carry out the on-the-ground operations of our Community Action Initiatives. These strategic partners are chosen through a multi-tiered process to help the United Way achieve change in the root causes of critical issues.
    • Provide competitive grants of cash and capacity-building services to qualified community-based 501 c 3 non-profits whose activities align with and support the goals of our Community Action Areas. Cash grants, technical assistance, leadership development, volunteers and in-kind donations enable these non-profits to fulfill their missions and develop their infrastructures.
    • Administers a variety of government-funded programs and funders’ collaboratives. Through these programs, we provide grants to community-based organizations in support of specific services such as emergency shelter and hunger and nutrition assistance.
