Volunteer Opportunities

CookShop Classroom is a school-based food and nutrition education program designed to encourage children to eat more wholesome foods, especially vegetables, whole grains, legumes and fruits.

What does it involve?

Participate with an elementary classroom one day each week for the Spring semester 2010 (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays only). The schedule is approximately 2-2½ hours each week between 9:00am-3:00pm. The grade levels that participate in CookShop Classroom range from Pre-K to 2nd grade, and the schools participating in the program are located in all five boroughs of New York City. Attendance at a 4-hour training is required for participation (see below for details).

CookShop Classroom volunteers are encouraged to actively participate in the program to maximize their potential and educational experience.

Curriculum materials

Work with field-tested, state-of-the-art curriculum materials that focus on classroom cooking experiences and allow children to explore how plants grow, where food comes from, and the health benefits of a plant-based diet.

Networking

Collaborate with teachers, parents, school administrative staff, and school nutrition committees to educate and improve the health of children. Gain exposure to organizations that impact food security and community health.
