Volunteer Here

One of CHEFs’ primary goals is to unite NYC’s stratified university campuses by offering free educational instruction in proper nutrition, meal preparation, and environmental consciousness. We also strive to create a positive relationship with NYC’s education community. Therefore, we offer the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the Food Bank of New York City’s CookShop program.

The CookShop program is a hands-on, teacher-led nutrition education curriculum offered to qualifying elementary public schools (50% or more of the student body relies on state-subsidized meals) in New York City’s five boroughs. Young students are exposed to plant-based foods on a weekly basis. They are given the opportunity to both explore and cook healthy recipes using these foods right in the classroom! Volunteers are an essential part of this program, as classrooms are often overcrowded, and this is a very hands-on curriculum.

CHEFs wishes to demonstrate our commitment to the local community by recruiting volunteers for CookShop. As any CookShop volunteer can tell you; participation is a chance to gain invaluable classroom experience while having a lot of fun. Volunteers are required to attend a four-hour training program in late January. You will receive a school placement after completing your personal placement preference form. This will ensure your participation with an elementary classroom one day each week for the spring semester. The schedule is approximately 2-2½ hours each week between 9:00am-3:00pm.

If you or anyone you know are interested in becoming a CookShop volunteer, please send us an email so we can provide you with more detailed information and register you for the spring training scheduled for late January.

Thank you for your kind support. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

CHEFs for Schools
